The New Order

This comes right after watching The Social Network, one of the most inspirational movies that I have ever seen. The movie depicts the life of a crazy american, the product of 21st century capitalism.

It shows how much a man can do in order to become successful, you win some and you lose some, but friendships cannot/should not be broken.

Having participated in a National Economics Festival at St.Xavier's College,Mumbai- a lot of realisations have come my way, students pursuing humanities in India at the undergraduate level whether it is a Symbiosis School of Excellence, which represents the new order where humanities is taught in a capitalist setting which can be described as a professional college setup within a private university or a St.Joseph's which are colleges run by missionaries, and which are autonomous and affiliated to a state university, the aim seems to be to attempt the entrance exams of JNU or a DU or even a Delhi School Of Economics for a postgraduate degree, in short Delhi seems to be the answer for Humanities education in India.

There seems to have been a paradigm shift in the way Humanities is being taught in the country. Especially with the advent of Liberal Studies in the country. The advantage with a liberal studies program is that faculty can be drawn from the Management/Engineering School/Department of the University. However, for this idea of education to succeed, it has to prove itself as a job provider since Indian parents associate a good degree as a degree that fetches a good campus placement. Issues have been raised about the kind of jobs on offer to liberal studies students, my answer to them would be that a job depends on the major and minor chosen and the career path that the students want to take.

As regards the quality of education offered in the B.L.S program, many students tend to take courses offerred to them lightly thinking that they are introductory courses, however, one has to understand that these courses are what help in deciding the major/minor and these are the courses that set a B.L.S student apart from a normal B.A or B.B.A

The old order(the regular degree colleges) aren't offering much in terms of innovativeness or applicability of the knowledge gained at the college level.

It is refreshing to be part of a change that is going to revolutionise education in India and in rest of the world. Mahatma Gandhi's words "Be the change you wish to see" is probably the best way that one can sum up the mindest of the students who have taken this bold step or students who are going to take it up.
